Medicinal Plants, Economical and Natural Agents with Antioxidant Activity

Abstract: Over the past few decades, the multifaceted anticancer action of various plant-derived flavonoids has been demonstrated both in in vitro and in vivo preclinical experiments as well as in clinical trials and large-scale epidemiological studies. These secondary metabolites, synthesized in plants in response to different environmental stresses, can exert diverse biological activities in the human body after ingestion of plant-based foods. Flavonoids are indeed well-known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, proapoptotic, anti-migratory, antiinvasive, anti-metastatic, and anti-angiogenic properties, thereby preventing and slowing the development of different types of human cancers. Accordingly, more and more people all over the world have increased their everyday intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and spices to get the benefits of flavonoids. In this commentary article, a critical view is presented on the possible gradual decrease in the health-promoting effects of edible and medicinal plant products related to changes in their flavonoid content and composition as a consequence of global warming. It is indeed generally accepted that biosynthesis and accumulation of certain flavonoids can be higher in plants cultivated in colder conditions, while a high temperature may even block the production of these agents. It only remains to be determined in the future as to what extent the lowering of flavonoids content in plant-based diets during global warming can contribute to continuously increasing worldwide incidence of new cancer cases, revealing the actual costs of human-induced environmental changes. : Important traditional medicinal plants with antioxidant activities in China are Asparagus, bindii, blueberries, barberry fruit, borage, calendula, camellia, coriander, cumin, Chinese bayberry, bitter Chinese melon, Chinese cabbage, Chinese cherry, Chinese jujube, Chinese olive, pomegranate, Chinese rose tea, Chinese toon, Chinese watermelon, black tea, green tea, knotweed, Chinese quince, Chinese rhubarb, pomegranate, sumac, thyme, wolfberry, dendrobium, drumstick tree, rosemary, black Zira, rose, Fiscus species, ginger, ginkgo, goji berry, grape, Jerusalem thorn, jujube, kiwifruit seed oil, and liquorice root. : The main derived exogenous natural antioxidants are derived from medicinal plants, fruits, foods, flowers, and traditional herbal medicines. Among various medicinal plants, the medicinal plants common in Asian traditional medicine have shown enormous potential as great sources of natural antioxidants. Polyphenols, and some other secondary bioactive compounds like anthocyanins, isoflavones, pterostilbene, resveratol, quercetin and catechins have shown potent antioxidant activity.

The role of Achillea millefolium in traditional medicine: A review of its use in different cultures

Background and aims: The Achillea genus, part of the Asteraceae family, is native to the Northern Hemisphere, from Europe to Asia. These plants thrive in temperate climates and are often found in dry or semi-dry conditions. This research aimed to examine the therapeutic uses of Achillea plants, drawing from traditional medicine texts and laboratory and clinical studies. Methods: This narrative review involved a comprehensive search of major scientific databases to gather information on Achillea and its extracts from native or endemic species within the Achillea genus. The review spanned several decades and utilized sources such as Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, and botanical and local books (1990 - present). Results: Achillea is a medicinal plant used for the treatment of gynecological problems, diabetes control, gastrointestinal disorders, side effects of cancer such as mucositis caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, skin reactions caused by radiotherapy, treatment of prostate cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and human gastric cancer. Conclusion: Considering the role of medicinal herbs in improving the side effects of cancer, treating certain types of cancer, controlling diabetes, and treating gastrointestinal problems, it is recommended to use this plant as a complementary medicine alongside routine treatments.

Prehabilitation for Patients Undergoing Orthopedic Surgery

Prehabilitation programs for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery have been gaining popularity in recent years. However, the current literature has produced varying results. To evaluate whether prehabilitation is associated with improved preoperative and postoperative outcomes compared with usual care for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL [Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature], AMED [Allied and Complementary Medicine], Embase, PEDRO [Physiotherapy Evidence Database], and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) were searched for published trials, and the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe, and European clinical trials registry were searched for unpublished trials from January 1, 2000, to June 30, 2022. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing prehabilitation with standard care for any orthopedic surgical procedure were included. Two independent reviewers screened trials. Data were pooled using a random-effects model. Recommendations were determined using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system and the study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guideline. Pain, function, muscle strength, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Forty-eight unique trials involving 3570 unique participants (2196 women [61.5%]; mean [SD] age, 64.1 [9.1] years) were analyzed. Preoperatively, moderate-certainty evidence favoring prehabilitation was reported for patients undergoing total knee replacement (TKR) for function (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.70 [95% CI, -1.08 to -0.32]) and muscle strength and flexion (SMD, 1.00 [95% CI, 0.23-1.77]) and for patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR) for HRQOL on the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (weighted mean difference [WMD], 7.35 [95% CI, 3.15-11.54]) and muscle strength and abduction (SMD, 1.03 [95% CI, 0.03-2.02]). High-certainty evidence was reported for patients undergoing lumbar surgery for back pain (WMD, -8.20 [95% CI, -8.85 to -7.55]) and moderate-certainty evidence for HRQOL (SMD, 0.46 [95% CI, 0.13-0.78]). Postoperatively, moderate-certainty evidence favoring prehabilitation was reported for function at 6 weeks in patients undergoing TKR (SMD, -0.51 [95% CI, -0.85 to -0.17]) and at 6 months in those undergoing lumbar surgery (SMD, -2.35 [95% CI, -3.92 to -0.79]). Other differences in outcomes favoring prehabilitation were of low to very low quality of evidence. In this systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs, moderate-certainty evidence supported prehabilitation over usual care in improving preoperative function and strength in TKR and HRQOL and muscle strength in THR, high-certainty evidence in reducing back pain, and moderate-certainty evidence in improving HRQOL in lumbar surgery. Postoperatively, moderate-certainty evidence supported prehabilitation for function following TKR at 6 weeks and lumbar surgery at 6 months. Prehabilitation showed promising results for other outcomes, although high risk of bias and heterogeneity affected overall quality of evidence. Additional RCTs with a low risk of bias investigating preoperative and postoperative outcomes for all orthopedic surgical procedures are required.

Early vs delayed enteral nutrition or parenteral nutrition in hospitalized patients: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta‐analyses of randomized trials

We conducted an umbrella review to summarize the existing evidence on the effect of early enteral nutrition (EEN) compared with other approaches, including delayed enteral nutrition (DEN), parenteral nutrition (PN), and oral feeding (OF) on clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients. We performed a systematic search up to December 2021, in MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science. We included systematic reviews with meta-analyses (SRMAs) of randomized trials investigating EEN compared with DEN, PN, or OF for any clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients. We used "A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews" (AMSTAR2) and the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for assessing the methodological quality of the systematic reviews and their included trial, respectively. The certainty of the evidence was rated using the "Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation" (GRADE) approach. We included 45 eligible SRMAs contributing with a total of 103 randomized controlled trials. The overall meta-analyses showed that patients who received EEN had statistically significant beneficial effects on most outcomes compared with any control (ie, DEN, PN, or OF), including mortality, sepsis, overall complications, infection complications, multiorgan failure, anastomotic leakage, length of hospital stay, time to flatus, and serum albumin levels. No statistically significant beneficial effects were found for risk of pneumonia, noninfectious complications, vomiting, wound infection, as well as number of days of ventilation, intensive care unit days, serum protein, and pre-serum albumin levels. Our results indicate that EEN may be preferred over DEN, PN, and OF because of the beneficial effects on many clinical outcomes.

Great doctors and scientists from the East: from princes of Persia, to icons of Asian science

Asian scholars especially from Iran and China preserved most of the wisdom and knowledge of antiquity in their writing and they had great influence even on both European traditional and modern medical sciences. The current searching was done by the keywords in main indexing systems including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science as well as the search engine of Google Scholar. Avicenna famous book was Canon, which reviewed all medical knowledge studied by the ancient Greek and Muslim scientists. Avicenna has introduced many medicinal plants and herbs and its knowledge influenced by both Eastern and Western traditional science. Rhazes was a great Persian alchemist, musician, mathematician, philosopher and physician. Bian Que was one of the most famous medical man and physician in ancient China who attached particular importance to the changes in the pulse examination. He is known as the founder of traditional Chinese medicine, and his four diagnostic methods were inspection, smelling and listening, inquiry, and palpation. Hua Tuo, Zhang Zhongjing, and Ge Hong were eclectic philosophers who dedicated his life to searching for physical immortality and traditional Chinese medicine, which he thought was attainable through alchemy. Sun Simiao also valued sanitation, exercise and disease prevention. Li Shizhen, a famous Chinese scholar who compiled a highly influential material medica. It is recommended to survey on their rules in different majors with details in future studies to make a better connection between modern and historical medical science.

The 100 most cited papers on amblyopia: a bibliographic perspective.

To analyze the top 100 most cited papers related to amblyopia. A bibliographic search in the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge across 55years was performed. Eighty-nine of the 100 papers were published in first-quartile journals. Half (50) of the senior authors were from the USA. Most papers dealt with clinical science (72) and included original research (84). Forty-two of the articles related to all three types of amblyopia (refractive, strabismic and deprivation). Thirty-four related to both strabismic and refractive amblyopia. Around two-thirds of the papers dealt with treatment (34) and pathophysiology (30). Almost a quarter (23%) of the papers were multicenter studies. Nearly half (48) of the papers were published between 2000 and 2010. The Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) published the highest number of studies (11), which dealt more with treatment (p = 0.01) and had higher average number of citations per years (p = 0.05). A larger number of articles on the treatment of amblyopia are newer (p = 0.01). There was no correlation between the time of their publication and the number of citations (p = 0.68, r = 0.042). Half of the papers were published between 2000 and 2010 and were spearheaded by PEDIG. Most papers dealt with treatment and pathophysiology. This study provides an important historical perspective, emphasizing the need for additional research to better understand this preventable and curable childhood vision impairment.

A bibliometric analysis of top-cited journal articles in interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome.

To identify and compare the top-cited articles from all indexed journals and urology-nephrology and obstetrics-gynecology journals in the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science's Citation Index Expanded on interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). Cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of top-cited articles in Web of ScienceTM (WoS) from 1900-2022. The articles were retrieved by the MeSH terms from NCBI. The characteristics of top 100 cited articles from all indexed journals and specialized journals were evaluated. A total of 5547 articles were collected from 1115 journals, in which 3225 articles were from 141 urological and gynecological specialized journals. The USA and the UK were the top two origins for articles on interstitial cystitis. The articles from non-specialized journals were more frequently cited than those from specialized journals (median [IQR], 221.5 [189.8-313.5] vs 131.0 [126.0-142.8], P < 0.0001). The citation number per year showed similar results (median [IQR], 239.9 [194.5-311.8] vs 132.0 [126.7-140.5], P < 0.0001). There were many more open-access articles in non-specialized than specialized journals (P = 0.0018). The current study initially queried the articles published on WoS on IC/BPS by the number of citations to identify the differences between two journal categories. The characteristics and trends of research were analyzed by citations to provide insights into the current research status and future direction.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of augmentation and combination treatments for early-stage treatment-resistant depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly burdensome health condition, for which there are numerous accepted pharmacological and psychological interventions. Adjunctive treatment (augmentation/combination) is recommended for the ~50% of MDD patients who do not adequately respond to first-line treatment. We aimed to evaluate the current evidence for concomitant approaches for people with early-stage treatment-resistant depression (TRD; defined below). We systematically searched Medline and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science to identify randomised controlled trials of adjunctive treatment of ⩾10 adults with MDD who had not responded to ⩾1 adequate antidepressant. The cochrane risk of bias (RoB) tool was used to assess study quality. Pre-post treatment meta-analyses were performed, allowing for comparison across heterogeneous study designs independent of comparator interventions. In total, 115 trials investigating 48 treatments were synthesised. The mean intervention duration was 9 weeks (range 5 days to 18 months) with most studies assessed to have low (n = 57) or moderate (n = 51) RoB. The highest effect sizes (ESs) were from cognitive behavioural therapy (ES = 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.09-2.07), (es)ketamine (ES = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.23-1.73) and risperidone (ES = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.29-1.61). Only aripiprazole and lithium were examined in ⩾10 studies. Pill placebo (ES = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.81-0.98) had a not inconsiderable ES, and only six treatments' 95% CIs did not overlap with pill placebo's (aripiprazole, (es)ketamine, mirtazapine, olanzapine, quetiapine and risperidone). We report marked heterogeneity between studies for almost all analyses. Our findings support cautious optimism for several augmentation strategies; although considering the high prevalence of TRD, evidence remains inadequate for each treatment option.

Preservation of fat-free mass in the first year after bariatric surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 122 studies and 10,758 participants.

The main goal of bariatric surgery (BS) in patients with morbid obesity is reducing body mass and fat mass (FM). However, body mass loss is systematically accompanied by a decline in fat-free mass (FFM). We aimed to examine the time-course effect of BS on FFM and body FFM percentage (FFM%) in individuals with morbid obesity by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled adult human trials. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, and Cochrane databases within the period from October 2002 to May 2021, with no restriction in the English language, to find studies assessing the effect of BS on FFM and FFM% in patients with morbid obesity. A meta-analysis of 122 studies carried out on data of 10,758 patients with morbid obesity after BS showed that BS was associated with a substantial decrease in FFM at 1 (-3.47 kg [95% confidence interval [CI]: -3.88, -3.07]), 3 (-5.59 kg [95% CI: -6.01, -5.17], 6 (-6.61 kg [95% CI: -7.25, -5.98]), and 12 (-8.34 kg [95% CI: -9.04, -7.63]) months after the surgery; however, the FFM% increased at 3 (6.51% [95% CI: 5.00, 8.02]), 6 (8.56% [95% CI: 6.81, 10.31], and 12 (11.29% [95% CI: 8.94, 13.64]) months after the surgery. BS was associated with sustained declines in FFM and increases in FFM% from 1-12 months with no indication of plateau phase postoperatively. These findings emphasize that postbariatric care should focus more on FFM loss during the first year after surgery.

Global Research Trends in Pediatric COVID-19: A Bibliometric Analysis

BackgroundCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged in 2019 and has since caused a global pandemic. Since its emergence, COVID-19 has hugely impacted healthcare, including pediatrics. This study aimed to explore the current status and hotspots of pediatric COVID-19 research using bibliometric analysis.MethodsThe Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science core collection database was searched for articles on pediatric COVID-19 to identify original articles that met the criteria. The retrieval period ranged from the creation of the database to September 20, 2021. A total of 3,561 original articles written in English were selected to obtain data, such as author names, titles, source publications, number of citations, author affiliations, and countries where the studies were conducted. Microsoft Excel (Microsoft, Redmond, WA) was used to create charts related to countries, authors, and institutions. VOSviewer (Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden, The Netherlands) was used to create visual network diagrams of keyword, author, and country co-occurrence.ResultsWe screened 3,561 publications with a total citation frequency of 30,528. The United States had the most published articles (1188 articles) and contributed the most with author co-occurrences. The author with the most published articles was Villani from the University of Padua, Italy. He also contributed the most co-authored articles. The most productive institution was Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. The institution with the most frequently cited published articles was Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The United States cooperated most with other countries. Research hotspots were divided into two clusters: social research and clinical research. Besides COVID-19 and children, the most frequent keywords were pandemic (251 times), mental health (187 times), health (172 times), impact (148 times), and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) (144 times).ConclusionPediatric COVID-19 has attracted considerable attention worldwide, leading to a considerable number of articles published over the past 2 years. The United States, China, and Italy have leading roles in pediatric COVID-19 research. The new research hotspot is gradually shifting from COVID-19 and its related clinical studies to studies of its psychological and social impacts on children.

Effects of nursing interventions to improve inpatients' sleep in intensive and non-intensive care units: Findings from an umbrella review.

This review aimed to synthesise the available reviews on the effects of nursing interventions on sleep quality among patients hospitalised in intensive care and non-intensive care units. Poor sleep quality is a common fact in hospitalised patients. Nurses can contribute to the improvement of patients' sleep quality and duration. A review of intervention reviews was carried out and reported following the PRISMA guidelines and checklist. We systematically searched for reviews published from January 2009 to December 2019 in PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Scopus, Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, Joanna Briggs Database of Systematic Reviews and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. Searches were repeated at 24 November 2020 to include the most recent evidence. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted. Nine reviews (representing 109 original papers) met the selection criteria and were included for critical appraisal. Overall, nursing interventions and sleep quality were poorly defined. We grouped the interventions into 3 categories (environmental, barrier and internal interventions) to provide a more comprehensive overview and examine effects of nursing interventions on inpatients sleep quality. Inconsistent results were obtained and low quality of the original articles was reported, making it difficult to establish absolute conclusions. The impact of environmental changes on patients' sleep was positive but inconclusive, while use of earplugs and eye masks, music and acupuncture generally showed positive results with moderate quality of evidence, and no harmful effects were reported.

Content Analysis of Studies Conducted on STEM Education from 2010 to 2020: Perspective of Emerging Technologies in Learning

The purpose of this study is to analyses the studies about science, technol-ogy, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the world by using the content analysis method and to reveal the trend in the field. In this study, which was carried out in a survey design to analyses the articles pub-lished in the Institute for Scientific Information web of science database be-tween 2010 and May 2020 and to determine the research trends of the arti-cles published in this direction, 100 articles selected by criterion sampling method were examined. In the selection of articles, attention was paid to in-clude studies on ‘STEM Education’ with respect to perspective of emerging technologies in learning. After examining the articles, the articles were analyses by content analysis method. The articles were examined in terms of descriptive information about the identity of the article, cate-gory field, article subject area, method, sample, data collection tools, data analysis methods and discussion size. The research data were interpreted based on the percentage and frequency findings, and data were presented as tables and graphs. According to the research data, it was determined that the highest number of publications was published be-tween 2016 and 2018, mostly studies with 2 authors were conducted, and almost all of them were written in English. In addition, it was determined that the number of hypotheses was mostly 2 or 3, and STEM education as a subject area was mostly han-dled covering all its dimensions, whereas mathematics and science educa-tion took second place. It was also observed that the experimental model and the mixed method were used extensively in the studies, and the written sources were frequently used as data collection tools. It was concluded that one-third of the sample level was primary education level studies, the sam-ple selection method was purposeful sampling, and the discussion size was 3 or 4. Based on the current research analysis, the pro-file and trends of the articles were monitored and important recommendations were made in the framework contributing to scientific research.

Bibliometric Analysis of the 103 Most-Cited Articles about COVID-19 in the Intensive Care Field

Introduction.:The COVID-19 pandemic affects the whole world and many studies were published about intensive care. Our aim is to assess the characteristics of 103 publications with most citations among literature related to COVID-19 in the intensive care field.&#x0D; Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study used suitable key words like “COVID-19”, “COVID-2019”, “SARS-CoV-2” and “pandemic” in the “Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science” database to determine the top 103 publications with most citations. Comparison of groups used the Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests.&#x0D; Results: Analysis of intensive care literature about COVID-19 up to October 2020 determined 1413 publications. The most-cited study had 1004 citations, while 7 was the minimum citations within the top 103 studies. The mean total citation number for these publications was 49.58±117.63. The most-cited study was by Xu, Zhe et al. in the April 2020 issue of Lancet Respiratory Medicine entitled “Pathological findings of COVID-19 associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome”. When the areas of focus of the top studies are investigated, they were COVID-19 treatment (26.21%), experience and recommendations about COVID-19 (23.30%) and COVID-19 physiopathology (13.59%). &#x0D; Conclusions: Our study is the first to analyze the top 103 studies with most citations related to COVID-19 in the intensive care literature. With the spread of the pandemic, academic articles continue to be published with great speed. Bibliographic studies provide critical information to assess the citation profile and determine the areas of focus. Future intensive care publications about COVID-19 will focus on diagnosis, treatment and physiopathology.

The cultural dimensions in supply chain management research: a state-of-the-art review and research agenda

PurposeThis research aims to review how current supply chain management (SCM) research addresses cultural issues, presents a critical assessment of literature and discusses future research avenues.Design/methodology/approachThe literature is reviewed using systematic literature review, bibliometric citation analysis and content analysis. A total of between 1995 and 2019 in Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science’s database.FindingsDescriptive data related to chronological evolution of literature, geographical location, influential papers and methodology are presented. Four main research areas were categorized, namely, papers on SC integration and performance; research on continuous improvement and lean initiatives; studies on the role of culture in sustainability, corporate social responsibility and green practices; and studies on emerging topics of research. Most studies focused on organizational culture frameworks, adopted a static approach to culture and targeted mainly developed countries and Asian emerging countries. A research agenda is suggested based on a multilevel cultural framework including operational and SCM culture.Research limitations/implicationsPractitioners and researchers will gain a greater understanding of how cultural issues have been addressed in current literature. A multilevel framework is proposed based on the concept of “operational” and “SCM culture”, to address some of the issues identified in current literature.Originality/valueTo the best of authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first literature reviews that considers both national and organizational culture dimensions in SCM research, whereas prior approaches were fragmented or one-dimensional.

Organic waste utilization and urban food waste composting strategies in China - A review

Food loss may occur in production, storage, transport, and processing, which are the stages of the value chain with the lowest returns. The current searching was done by the keywords in main indexing systems including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science as well as the search engine of Google Scholar. The most important points challenging areas that represent opportunities for stakeholders to look into in China are, put in place suitable economic incentives to encourage restaurants to get more involved in the formal system, create a comprehensive regulation system to benefit all relevant stakeholders by clearly defining their respective roles and responsibilities, which is necessary for the proper functioning of the whole system. In China, the most important regulations, policies and plans are regulations on safety issues of food waste treatment, detailed countermeasures on organizing, educating, supervising, and inspecting the work on food waste reduction in China, and detailed plant for household waste collection and treatment, issued by Chinese government, state council, and ministry of environmental protection. Setting national goals, awareness-raising campaigns, strict and appropriate regulation, stakeholder engagement, biorefinery and food waste recycling to animal feed are important strategies for better waste management. The most important food waste management practices in China are source separation, animal feed, rendering, composting, co-digestion, anaerobic digestion, incineration, landfill, and etc. Understanding social factors influencing household behavior is utmost importance; public education and specific communication highly contribute to improve recycling.

Artificial intelligence with kidney disease: A scoping review with bibliometric analysis, PRISMA-ScR.

Background:Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on our lives and plays many roles in various fields. By analyzing the past 30 years of AI trends in the field of nephrology, using a bibliography, we wanted to know the areas of interest and future direction of AI in research related to the kidney.Methods:Using the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge database, we searched for articles published from 1990 to 2019 in January 2020 using the keywords AI; deep learning; machine learning; and kidney (or renal). The selected articles were reviewed manually at the points of citation analysis.Results:From 218 related articles, we selected the top fifty with 1188 citations in total. The most-cited article was cited 84 times and the least-cited one was cited 12 times. These articles were published in 40 journals. Expert Systems with Applications (three articles) and Kidney International (three articles) were the most cited journals. Forty articles were published in the 2010s, and seven articles were published in the 2000s. The top-fifty most cited articles originated from 17 countries; the USA contributed 16 articles, followed by Turkey with four articles. The main topics in the top fifty consisted of tumors (11), acute kidney injury (10), dialysis-related (5), kidney-transplant related (4), nephrotoxicity (4), glomerular disease (4), chronic kidney disease (3), polycystic kidney disease (2), kidney stone (2), kidney image (2), renal pathology (2), and glomerular filtration rate measure (1).Conclusions:After 2010, the interest in AI and its achievements increased enormously. To date, AIs have been investigated using data that are relatively easy to access, for example, radiologic images and laboratory results in the fields of tumor and acute kidney injury. In the near future, a deeper and wider range of information, such as genetic and personalized database, will help enrich nephrology fields with AI technology.

Role of Blood-Based Biomarkers in Ischemic Stroke Prognosis: A Systematic Review.

Outcome prognostication in ischemic stroke patients remains challenging due to limited predictive properties of existing models. Blood-based biomarkers might provide additional information to established prognostic factors. We intended to identify the most promising prognostic biomarkers in ischemic stroke, their incremental prognostic value, and whether their predictive value differs among etiologies. We searched MEDLINE (Ovid) and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge for articles reporting the predictive performance of blood-based biomarkers measured up to 7 days after ischemic stroke and reporting functional outcome or death at least 7 days after stroke. This work updates a previous systematic review (up to January 2007), follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement and was registered (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews PROSPERO 2018; https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/; Unique identifier: CRD42018094671). Two hundred ninety-one articles published between January 2007 and August 2018 comprising 257 different biomarkers met inclusion criteria. Median sample size was 232 (interquartile range, 110-455); 260 (89%) articles reported regression analyses with 78% adjusting for stroke severity, 82% for age, 67% for both, and 9% for none of them; 37% investigated discrimination, 5% calibration, and 11% reclassification. Including publications from a previous systematic review (1960-January 2007), natriuretic peptides, copeptin, procalcitonin, mannose-binding lectin, adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein, and cortisol were the biomarkers most consistently associated with poor outcome in higher-quality studies showing an incremental value over established prognostic factors. Other biomarkers were less consistently associated with poor outcome or were reported in lower quality studies. High heterogeneity among studies precluded the performance of a meta-analysis. The number of reports on prognostic blood-based biomarkers in ischemic stroke increased 3.5-fold in the period January 2007 to August 2018. Although sample size increased, methodological flaws are still common. Natriuretic peptides and markers of inflammation, atherogenesis, and stress response are the most promising prognostic biomarkers among identified studies.

Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty: A Bibliometric Analysis of the 50 Most Commonly Cited Studies

BackgroundUnicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an accepted treatment option for unicompartmental femorotibial degeneration and is gaining in popularity. The goal of this review is to evaluate the top 50 most cited articles pertaining to UKA to better help surgeons understand the trends, identify influential articles, and navigate this body of literature more effectively.MethodsThe Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge database was used to identify all articles related to UKA. The initial screening was based on the number of citations for each article. The list was then refined to include only peer-reviewed original articles, review articles, or editorials. Data were extracted from the articles to rank the articles in the descending order from the most citations to the least.ResultsInitial search yielded 1844 articles. Fifty were identified to match the study criteria. The highest ranked article was cited a total of 463 times, whereas the lowest ranked article was cited 101 times. The average total number of citations per publication was 162. The earliest article on the list was published in 1978. The majority of publications assessed long-term outcomes of UKA (n = 6, 52%). The majority of articles were graded a level of evidence of III (n = 21 42%), whereas only 3 articles were graded a level I.ConclusionsThis review provides a quantitative analysis of the most-cited literature pertaining to UKA, which has a paucity of level I studies.

Benefit-Risk Assessment of Vaccines. Part I: A Systematic Review to Identify and Describe Studies About Quantitative Benefit-Risk Models Applied to Vaccines.

IntroductionUnderstanding the balance between the benefits and risks of vaccination is essential to ensure informed and adequate public health decision making. Quantitative benefit–risk models (qBRm) represent useful tools to help decision makers with supporting benefit–risk assessment throughout the lifecycle of a medical product. However, few initiatives have been launched to harmonise qBRm approaches, specifically for vaccines.ObjectivesThe aim of this paper was to identify publications about qBRm applied to vaccines through a systematic literature review, and to describe their characteristics.MethodsMedline, Scopus and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge databases were searched to identify articles in English, published from database inceptions up to December 2019. The search strategy included the combination of three key concepts: ‘benefit–risk’, ‘modelling’ and ‘vaccines’. Data extracted included the modelling context and the methodological approaches used.ResultsOf 3172 publications screened, 48 original publications were included. Most of the selected studies were published over the past decade and focused on rotavirus (15), dengue (10) and influenza (6) vaccines. The majority (30) of studies reported analyses related to high-income countries. The methodology of the studies differed, particularly in modelling techniques, benefit–risk measures, and sensitivity analyses. The present work also pointed out a high level of variability in the quality of reporting across studies, with particular regard to input parameters and methodological approaches.ConclusionsThis review provides an extensive list of qBRm applied to vaccines. Discrepancies across studies were identified during our review. While the number of published qBRm studies is increasing, no reporting guidance for qBRm applied to vaccines is currently available. The efficacy of sour tea (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) on selected cardiovascular disease risk factors: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

This study sought to summarize clinical evidence of sour tea (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) administration on cardiovascular disease risk factors. PubMed, Scopus, Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, and Google Scholar were systematically searched from inception to June 2019 to identify randomized clinical trials, which assessed the effect of sour tea consumption on lipid profiles, fasting plasma glucose, and blood pressure in adult populations. Mean and standard deviation for each parameter were extracted to calculate effect size. Cochrane Collaboration tools were used to evaluate risk of bias assessment. A total of seven randomized clinical trials consisting 362 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled effect size demonstrated that sour tea consumption significantly reduces fasting plasma glucose (-3.67 mg/dl, 95% confidence interval, CI [-7.07, -0.27]; I2 = 37%), systolic blood pressure (-4.71 mmHg, 95% CI [-7.87, -1.55]; I2 = 53%), and diastolic blood pressure (-4.08 mmHg, 95% CI [-6.48, -1.67]; I2 = 14%). Although no significant effect was observed on triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol following sour tea consumption, a trend toward a significant reduction was found in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol serum concentrations (p = 0.08). This systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that sour tea consumption could have beneficial effect in controlling glycemic status and blood pressure among adult population.
